The Advantage
GlassBlock Security

Glass blocks are made by fusing two half blocks; creating a hollow block with a partial vacuum (More Detail)  . Without the failure tendency of insulated glass, glass blocks still give both energy savings and sound insulation.

Although glass blocks have been around for over fifty years, the various new sizes of the blocks now allow for custom sized fabrication. Like other replacement windows, GlassBlock windows are pre-made; saving time, money and clean up. GlassBlock windows are assembled using the proven method and strength of a solid masonry construction versus the use of plastic spacers or silicone strips. They are also reinforced   in the bed joint with stainless steel penrod, and banded with polypropylene strapping giving added security. Although glass blocks are very difficult to break, the partial vacuum will cause it to implode if broken sounding like a gun shot, deterring potential break-ins.

The most common additional need is for ventilation. This is accomplished in one of three ways:

#3The original air vent featuring the strength of extruded aluminum and a double flanged construction wrapping around the block and the steel reinforcing. It is sized as not to compromise the security of the GlassBlock window, and to make it most efficient, a projection vent is used allowing it to be left open 24 hours a day spring until fall. An inside screen and storm panel are provided.

#2  The Vinyl Hopper, although not as strong, provides better insulation. It's pull in operation requires a little more concern for the weather. It is recommended for bath and above ground windows were security is not the prime interest and closing of the window would be a normal activity.

HOPPER VENTILATORS

- double panel, frosted and clear glass sash door with extruded bubble seal on perimeter ensure good thermal properties
- superior UV resistance and color retention PVC extrusion
- maintains structural integrity under harsh weather conditions
- maintenance – free performance that will not dent, peel or rot
- insect screen on the vent exterior keep the bugs out
- wide range of sizes are available
- variety of 5 exterior colors (interior remains WHITE) to match with your existing window or house elevation: WHITE, ALMOND, BRONZE, COCOA, FOREST GREEN.

  # 1 This newest air vent has solved the water problems of the pull in hopper while providing  insulation and clean lines.  The vinyl projection air vent combines the best of both worlds of air vents.

The need to vent a dryer through a window is done with the use of a dryer vent assembly for a standard 4" exhaust hose.

Also GlassBlock windows can be designed around water pipes, air conditioning lines, telephone lines, etc. And still retain the advantages of the GlassBlock window.

How are they put together?

GlassBlock windows are mortared together Upright using white type S mortar.
Reinforced with steel penrod reinforcing in the bed joint

and banded with a polypropylene strapping.

BACK

How are they shipped?

GlassBlock windows need to be carried upright.

What is the weight?

GlassBlock windows weigh approx. 16 lb. Per square foot. A basement window would weigh approx. 65 lb.. Large windows can be made in multiple sections.

What sizes are available?

GlassBlock windows are made on every 2" increment finishing approx. 1/4" less than the nominal size.

How do you determine what size blocks are used?

The size of the window determines the size of the blocks used, giving a balanced layout. The window will have a symmetrical and "eye-pleasing" look.

How are the windows installed?

GlassBlock windows can be installed on wood using the same methods as other replacement windows, treating the window as one piece of insulated glass.

GlassBlock windows can also be installed into the masonry opening using mortar.
